Anonymous asked: Will you put this out as an iPad app? I love this game but would really love to play it on a larger screen.

Thanks for the feedback.

Yes, I have started to for on a universal version for both the iPhone and iPad. However, I’m waiting for official specs for the iPad 3. If, as I suspect, the iPad 3 has a retina display, I’ll need to re-work the graphics as the iPhone ones will be too small.

Version 1.2: iOS 4 Support

After an initial rejection for using a private API (I hadn’t changed this line of code since 1.0, so I’m not sure how the missed this before) version 1.2 is available for download

What’s new in this version:

  • iOS 4 multi-tasking support
  • iPhone 4 Retina Display Support
  • Improved hints

New version in the works

It’s been a while, but there’s a new version of Dominate on its way to support iOS 4 and the iPhone 4 Retina Display.

A lot of the graphics in Dominate are not pre-rendered, which means we get Retina Display support ‘for free’. This was a concious decision I made from the outset. I only adopted pre-rendered graphics for elements that where either too complex to draw in code using Quartz or too slow to render on my original iPhone 3G. My reasoning for this was always to be as resolution independent as possible.

The pre-rendered PNGs I use for icons are drawn using the excellent Omni Graffle and the loading screen, background, and logo are all rendered using the even more excellent Modo. Both of these let me re-render at a higher resolution with the click of a button.

All things considered supporting the Retina Display was fairly painless.

Version 1.1: Go get it…

Apple finally sorted out approving version 1.1.

What’s new:

  • Undo and Redo
  • Improved solver
  • Improved timing estimates

AppStore Approval Delays

It’s taken Apple a over month and counting to do absolutely nothing with the v1.1 update that I submitted to them. So, I have cancelled and resubmitted in the hope that it’s got lost in the sea of iPhone OS 3.0 updates.

Will keep you posted.

Work in Progress: Undo and Redo

After a successful launch, we’ve listened to initial feedback and are preparing a new version of Dominate that will allow you to undo and redo all your moves, making it easier to undo guesses, and mistakes.

More on Difficulty Levels

Because the puzzles are auto-generated and essentially random, it’s really difficult to generate them with a particular difficulty. Instead, after generating the board, Dominate tries to solve the puzzle itself using a human-like heuristic approach, and gives you a target time to solve the puzzle in. Harder puzzles will take longer than easier ones.

The time that it generates is then adjusted up or down according to the level you are playing at. Essentially, the level you gain is there to give you an idea as to how quick you are at solving the puzzles. You can choose the level you are playing at from the Settings screen, where you can also see your performance relative to the target times you have been set.

Dominate will also automatically progress you to the next level when you are consistently beating your target times. This happens when you have played at least ten games at a your current level, and the times for your most recent five games are on average 75% of the target time.
